Tamalpais High School’s Legacy of Excellence
Located in Mill Valley, Tamalpais High School has a long and celebrated history when it comes to mock trial competitions.
With a resumé that includes four state championships and a national title from 2005, Tam High is no stranger to high-stakes performances.
It’s clear that the team’s culture of hard work and commitment to excellence has created a powerhouse that continues to dominate in Marin County and beyond.
According to coach Talia Beyer, the key to this year’s success lies in the students’ ability to remain focused even under intense pressure.
Faculty adviser Kelsey Holtzinger added that teamwork, dedication, and a relentless drive to grow are at the heart of the program’s remarkable achievements.
These qualities have been passed down through generations of Tam High teams, ensuring the program’s continued success year after year.
The Road to State Finals
The journey to the state finals wasn’t without its challenges.
On January 25 and February 1, Tam High faced stiff competition during the 37th annual Marin County mock trial competition, hosted at Marin County Superior Court in San Rafael.
Participating schools included San Rafael High, Archie Williams High in San Anselmo, Marin Academy in San Rafael, Marin Catholic in Kentfield, Redwood High in Larkspur, San Marin High in Novato, and Terra Linda High in Terra Linda.
Despite the fierce competition, Tam High emerged victorious, once again proving their ability to excel under pressure.
This year’s fictional case, designed by Teach Democracy, centered around a political rivalry that escalated into a dramatic kidnapping.
Each team had the task of analyzing evidence, honing their arguments, and presenting their case before 13 volunteer judges and 38 scoring attorneys from the local legal community.
The volunteers deserve a special mention, as their participation enriches the program and provides valuable mentorship to the next generation of legal minds.
Shining Stars and Teamwork in Mill Valley
While mock trial is undoubtedly a team effort, Tam High’s co-captains, Ryan Brogger and Ruby Kosek, stood out for their exceptional individual performances.
Both were honored for their contributions, showcasing not only their personal talents but also the strong culture of leadership and camaraderie within the team.
Their recognition reflects the unity and self-motivation that make Tam High’s program so unique.
A Program That Inspires All of Marin County
Beyond Tam High’s success, the mock trial program is a source of pride for the entire Marin County community.
Schools across the county—from Novato to Larkspur and San Anselmo—play a critical role in fostering civic engagement and critical thinking in students.
These annual competitions offer an incredible opportunity for students to step into the roles of attorneys, witnesses, and courtroom staff, giving them firsthand experience with the judicial system.
Programs like these are crucial for preparing students to be engaged citizens and critical thinkers.
For Tam High, in particular, the mock trial team has become a shining example of what can be achieved through hard work, teamwork, and a commitment to excellence.
